PBFI uses SSF turned over by DTI in rebuilding structures in calamity affected areas

Earthquake and storm-proof hybrid bamboo structures may soon replace houses and edifices ravaged by the earthquake and typhoon in calamity affected areas in Bohol, Cebu, Leyte and Samar.

In 2014, the Philippine Bamboo Foundation Inc. (PBFI) will collaborate with government and international organizations to cater to the present need of producing alternative green structures for the calamity stricken areas in Bohol, Cebu, Leyte & Samar provinces.

Recently, the Department of Trade and Industry turned over a Shared Service Facility to the Philippine Bamboo Foundation Inc. (PBFI) for use in its various projects last March 3 in Dauin, Negros Oriental.

Beneficiaries of the project include not just workers of the PBFI, but also other primary & secondary bamboo processors in the bamboo industry of Negros Oriental.
With the common service facility, workers in the bamboo industry can now access equipment and mechanized tools to increase their production capacity, efficiency and serve new markets through more products and services.

The Philippine Bamboo Foundation Inc. (PBFI) is an NGO that hosts the biggest bamboo nursery for the entire Visayas & Mindanao with at least 40 bamboo species grown in the nursery site in Dauin, Negros Oriental.

A Shared Service Facility (SSF) is a strategic complementary project that intends to balance off existing programs such as National Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Project (NICCEP) to achieve inclusive growth as envisioned by the current administration.

The engineered bamboo produced by PBFI includes a wide range of composite products manufactured by binding together bamboo strips, slats, strands, particles, fibers or veneers with a suitable glue. (ends)

DTI conducts NICCEP Workshop for CV Industry Clusters

A workshop for stakeholders of the National Industry Cluster Enhancement Project (NICCEP) will be held in Cebu City on March 6 to 7 this year.

Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the activity aims to assess performance of the four industry clusters in Central Visayas, namely Information and Communications Technology (ICT); Gifts, Decors and Housewares (GDH); Health and Wellness (H&W); and Tourism.

The workshop will entail evaluation of what has been done and update the project activity plan for better performance in the succeeding periods.

NICCEP is a three-year joint project of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Japan international Cooperation Agency (JICA) that aims to enhance the capacity of selected industry clusters to plan, implement, facilitate service delivery, evaluate projects and improve industry competitiveness and business environment.

With the adoption of the project, SMEs in the industry and services sectors are expected to be more globally competitive.

The DTI is positive that the NICCEP will help the Philippine government in achieving its goal of inclusive growth and poverty alleviation. Through the cluster approach, the economic growth being experienced by the country will be felt by a broad spectrum of the Filipino population.

The Philippine SME sector comprises about 99.6 percent of all registered firms nationwide, it employees 69.9 percent of the labor force and contributes 32 percent to the country’s economy. (ends)
