DTI 7 celebrates Consumer Welfare Month and National Standards Week in October

The Department of Trade and Industry Central Visayas Regional and Provincial Offices join Filipino consumers in the Philippines in celebrating the Consumer Welfare Month and the National Standards Week (NSW) in 2014.

This year’s Consumer Welfare Month, which carries the theme “Sapat na Impormasyon: Susi sa Wastong Paggamit ng Enerhiya”,  will be filled with consumer welfare related activities such as seminars that disseminate information on energy efficiency, consumer rights and responsibilities, Diskwento Caravan, monitoring activities on price and price tag, as well as product standard monitoring activities.

Recently, the 2nd Bohol Youth Consumer Summit was held at the Sta. Fe Hall, Dao Diamond Hotel and Restaurant, Dao District, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Organized by the Consumer Watch-Bohol, Inc. (CWBI) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Bohol Provincial Office, the activity was participated by members of the Bohol Youth Consumer Movement composed of students from three universities and two colleges in Bohol, namely: Holy Name University, University of Bohol, Bohol Island State University, Bohol Institute of Technology, and Philippine Maritime Institute of Bohol.

Topics discussed during the 2nd consumer summit included Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption, Financial Literacy and Food Safety. Guest speakers were Engr. Marlon Domingo of the Department of Energy Visayas Field Office,  Finance Coordinator  Ms. Marietta Gasatan of South Palms and Food Sector Manager Yoradyl Israel of DTI Bohol.

The  Bohol Youth Consumer Movement (BYCM)  is an offshoot of efforts made by the CWBI and the DTI to educate the youth on their consumer rights and responsibilities.

The Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) is celebrated every October in compliance with Presidential Proclamation No. 1098.  During the Consumer Month, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reiterates its commitment to reinforce its services, programs and activities to protect the interests of consumers with the continued assistance of Philippine industries.

Proclamation 1327 was declared on October 03, 1975 for the Philippines to annually celebrate the National Standards Week (NSW) from October 08-14 through the DTI-Bureau of Product Standards as the National Standards Body (NSB) in connection to the WSD and due to the great impact of standardization activities to the accelerating economic growth. Since then, the weeklong event is being observed yearly to instill and highlight the importance of standards to Philippine consumers and industries.
